Beans & Bagels is a cozy café tucked into Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood, just a short stroll from the Brown Line station. It feels a bit like a neighborhood living room with a purpose—a quiet spot to enjoy thoughtfully made coffee and baked goods while maybe taking a break from work or meeting a friend.

The café stands out for its attention to quality, especially when it comes to their baked goods. The homemade croissants have a flaky, buttery texture that locals keep coming back for, often pairing them with a smooth, rich brewed coffee or one of the flavorful espresso options. There’s a nice balance here between classic bagel shop offerings—like the Everything Bagel toasted perfectly or the Breakfast Sandwich on inventive options like a blueberry bagel with ham, scrambled eggs, and spinach—and carefully crafted coffee.

The interior sets Beans & Bagels apart from the typical coffee shop. It feels intimate but has an unexpected sprawl with a side room decorated like an old map room or library, complete with vintage books, chess sets, and even a piano. This makes the space not only a good spot for a casual breakfast or lunch but also a quiet place to focus, work, or simply unwind surrounded by details that invite a slower pace.

There’s a community vibe here, reinforced by friendly staff who seem genuinely invested in both the food and the customer experience. Sustainability is also part of the daily rhythm—customers are encouraged to bring their own cups or use reusable options provided by the café—which adds to the thoughtful atmosphere without feeling preachy.

Morning visitors are most typical, but the quiet afternoons can also be a sweet time, especially for those who want some breathing room to read or collaborate quietly. Families and individuals across ages find something to enjoy here, whether that’s the playful layering of tastes in a bagel sandwich or the inviting, low-key ambiance with ample opportunities to connect over a game of chess or a shared moment by the piano.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amazing Croissants and Great Coffee! Beans & Bagels is one of my favorite spots in Chicago! Every time I visit, I can’t resist their croissants—they are simply incredible! Perfectly flaky, buttery, and always fresh. The coffee is also top-notch, with a rich and smooth flavor that pairs perfectly with their baked goods. The atmosphere is cozy, and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. If you’re looking for a great place to grab a delicious pastry and coffee in Chicago, this is the spot! Highly recommended!

I go here for the friendly staff as much as I do the delicious food, warmly decorated interior, and a piano in which I can take a break from my computer work. The bagels and pastries are delicious, but the espresso is my favorite, with lots of flavor. You can tell they care about everything they make there and everything they do, including their environmental practices. Truly a gem that I hope exists for decades to come. Thanks B&B.

Great experience here! Bagel sandwiches were so fresh. Wonderful space with original details to the building - you've got original flooring, books on display on theoretical chess, hardcover volumes of National Geographic from the 80s, this place is legit

Absolute must go gem of a spot. Tucked away in the neighborhood right next to the brown line, serving counter culture coffee, pastries, bagels, and sandwiches. Everything was very delicious and of very high quality. The interior may seem small at first but there is a side seating room decorated like an old style map room or library with lots of vintage books, wood finish, and chess sets. The room has large format seating for groups or letting you sit with your neighbors. Definitely a must try!

everything is wonderful here, especially the atmosphere…think fun library with material and games for old and young…and a piano that people can play, beautifully! 5 stars!

Great food, awesome people, and now, impeccable vibes! I've been going Beans & Bagels for four years (since 2020) and they just opened back up on the inside post COVID, and it's a great place to meet friends, read, and enjoy a nice cup of tea with an amazing lox sandwich, my personal favorite. They also make their own pastries, so make sure to check those out!

Choice pastries and coffee aside, I love the amiable and thoughtful crew that is B&B! Even though they are my downstairs neighbors, I enjoy canoodling with the staff as I get my morning special, “The Ju Ju Bear” (which happens to be iced cold brew w/four shots of espresso! Ironically, my resting heart rate is 48 pumps per minute, but I digress!) I mean, how many coffee shops will give their patron a standing ovation when they walk in? Well they do! How many coffee shops name one of their drinks after their overly caffeinated patron? They do! They adhere to their Ruby red neon lit sign that blissfully glows during the midnight hours to “Love Everyone” and they do just that

Cozy little coffee shop. Have not actually tried their bagels but their potato leek pastry and their spinach feta pastry have become one of my favorite breakfast items around the neighborhood. Their old fashioned donut is also a great choice.
